In October this year, Emma and Mel will be taking part in a trek to Machu Picchu in Peru. The ten day trek will include work on a local community project, acclimatising to high altitude and embarking on a gruelling trek up the mountains to the final destination of Machu Picchu. This is a huge challenge but they promise us they are really looking forward to it! There are 26 people from across the UK taking part, some are Officers, some are members of other Corps, and there are others who just admire The Salvation Army and want to do something to help.
The fundraising target is £7,000 between them, but they are naturally hoping to raise more than this to support The Salvation Army.
Mel says: “One Sunday evening waiting for the meeting to start, I was sat looking through the Salvationist. As I turned to the back page I saw the advert for Trek Peru 2014 and my heart leapt. It was one of those light bulb moments and I thought I have to do this. I turned to Emma who was sat behind me and said I need to do this and she immediately said that she would do it with me. I firmly believe that God led me to that page and this is something I need to do.”
Emma has always wanted to do something challenging yet rewarding at the same time and says: “Trek Peru is going to be that challenge. The recent flooding has seriously affected friends and the local community, a terrible blow. I feel more strongly than ever that this challenge will enable us to raise these vital funds to help people who need it.”
The current total stands at just over £1,600 which is an excellent start. To help raise the rest Emma and Mel are running various activities that you will see take place over the next few months, including a vocal concert marathon incorporating seven concerts in seven corps in one day (30 minutes concerts in each corps).
They are also asking for corporate and individual donations, and if you can help with this please do speak to Emma or Mel. There is an online donations page with JustGiving, and every donation, however large or small, will make a difference.
